The Zao area of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture is the home of the Zao Onsen Ski Resort, which features so-called “snow monster” that are in fact frost-covered trees arising from the site’s unique natural environment. The resort also boasts a skiing distance of around ten kilometers—among the longest in Japan—and fine powder snow for skiers to enjoy while also offering one of the oldest hot springs in the country, which features strongly acidic water, a rare delight. Yamagata City is also Japan’s largest consumer of ramen and is therefore home to among the finest ramen in the world.

We would love for you to come visit Yamagata City and see just what kinds of “monsters” you encounter.
